Change the statistics
The statistics are heartbreaking: only 4 out of every 100 orphanage graduates become productive members of society. The remaining 96 tend to adopt an asocial lifestyle and fall into alcoholism, drug addiction or even end up having to report to the authorities. This is often the case due to the fact that, when an adolescent leaves a state-run orphanage, he or she finds himself or herself alone facing the adult world, a world he or she is not yet prepared for. They are very easily influenced by antisocial circles and do not know who to turn to for help. They don't know how to plan a budget, how to apply for an allowance or even where to buy furniture. In order to prepare children and teenagrers for adult life, the Foundation Polza runs a programme called "Social Adaptation", which teaches them the most basic skills necessary for their future development and well-being. We teach the children and teenagrers the most basic and simple things, such as how to look after themselves (their skin, their body and their personal belongings), how to calculate a budget, how to cope with money, how to cook and buy food on a certain budget, as well as how to do sports and lead a healthy lifestyle. We have also created an online programme called "We are together", which aims to provide a common space of support for young people who have graduated from orphanages.
